New flag controversy raises tensions ahead of Iran-Egypt World Cup clash

The World Cup group-stage game between Iran and Egypt has become one of the most sensitive fixtures of the 2026 tournament. When the draw paired the two nations together, the game was scheduled for the same weekend as Seattle’s Pride celebrations, with the host city set to stage a range of LGBTQ+ events throughout the weekend.

After the scheduling became clear, both countries expressed opposition to the coincidence, while the Egyptian Football Association said the celebrations conflicted with its cultural and religious values. As kickoff has drawn closer, the attention surrounding the game has continued to grow.

Are rainbow flags allowed at World Cup games?

The latest development comes from FIFA, which has confirmed that LGBTQ+ flags will be permitted inside the stadium.

“General expressions in support of human rights, including rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity, are permitted,” FIFA said in a statement. The policy was also confirmed by The Athletic.

FIFA added that such items will be allowed provided they comply with the tournament’s stadium regulations. Flags and banners will be subject to size restrictions, while political messages and displays remain prohibited.

Iran reiterates its position ahead of the game

According to The Athletic, a spokesperson for Iran’s national team said: “Our position is that no ceremonies or promotional activities related to this movement should take place inside the stadium or as part of the match atmosphere.”

The spokesperson added: “It is expected that FIFA will take the necessary measures to ensure that no ceremonies or promotional activities related to it are held inside the stadium or as part of the official match environment.”

Iran and Egypt are scheduled to meet on Saturday, June 27 (11 p.m. ET). Although Seattle’s main Pride parade is set for Sunday, June 28, events are planned throughout the weekend.

Despite the attention surrounding the fixture, FIFA President Gianni Infantino rejected suggestions that it should be described as the “Pride Game.” “I must clarify that there will be no ‘Pride Game’ at the FIFA World Cup. There will be a FIFA World Cup game in Seattle, and on the same day there will be events organized by outside entities in the city. But that has nothing to do with the game itself.”
