Guardiola: "Real Madrid is not best team of the decade"
Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has responded to Santiago Solari's claim that Real Madrid is the best team of the last decade.
Pep Guardiola used a press conference interview to take a swipe at Real Madrid fans and Santiago Solari, contradicting recent comments made by the Madrid coach by stating that, “Real is not the best team of the decade.”
The Manchester City manager had recently drawn the ire of Real Madrid fans and coach Solari when he claimed that Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were the greatest clubs of the last decade.
Later Solari hit back by saying that the former Barca boss Guardiola had deliberately omitted Real Madrid to provoke a response, claiming: “Madrid is the best club of the last century and in the history of the game. And having said that, Madrid is also the best of the last decade.”
Madrid best in Europe, but not the best - Guardiola
In a press conference ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Chelsea this weekend, Guardiola took his chance to respond to Solari when a reporter brought it to his attention that Blues boss Maurizio Sarri had praised his City site as currently being the best team in Europe.
"Thank you so much, but I will be nice for the Madrid supporters, who are upset with me, who are saying the best team in Europe is Real Madrid. Because in the last three years they won [the Champions League] and I think they are the best team by far in Europe in the last decade, and the best team is Real Madrid,” said Guardiola.
"But Real Madrid is not the best team of the decade when you count leagues and cups and the other ones, because Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich won six or seven times and they [Madrid] won two. I am pretty sure that Solari now understands my answer better. I am pretty sure they are happy now with me.”
