ATLÉTICO-REAL MADRID

Godín, Filipe, Juanfran... The Atleti old guard's final derby?

The Atlético stalwarts' contracts end in June and it remains to be seen whether all three will be wearing the rojiblanco jersey next season.

Saturday's Madrid derby in the Wanda Metropolitano between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid could be a swansong for three of Atlético's finest servants in the Simeone era.

The old guard

The contracts of Diego Godín, Filipe Luis and Juanfran Torres all end in June and it remains to be seen whether all three will still make up one of the meanest defences in football next year. It seems unlikely that the first two will be playing under Simeone next term as Godín has been repeatedly linked with Inter and Filipe is reportedly close to a move away from the club at the end of the season. Juanfran looks the most likely to stay beyond the summer

Derby records

In Simeone's 28 encounters with crosstown rivals Real Madrid as coach, Godín has been at the heart of his defence in 27 of them, a stat which reflects how sorely the Uruguayan centre-back would be missed next season. In Atlético's quest for the holy grail - the Champions League - all three played in Lisbon and Milan, with Filipe Luis enduring a frustrating season at Chelsea - in the year sandwiched between the two finals - before making a return. The Brazilian left-back has featured in 16 Madrid derbies, winning three, drawing four and losing nine, while Juanfran - who cruelly missed a penalty in the 2016 final - has played in 22, coming out on top in six, tying nine and losing seven

All three players have become synonymous with Simeone's Atlético and before a possible changing of the guard all three will be keen to stamp their authority on Saturday's clash.
