Real Madrid loanee Achraf Hakimi's impressive first season with Borussia Dortmund came to an abrupt end after the Moroccan international suffered a broken metatarsal in Saturday's 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.

Following the injury, the young defender flew to the Spanish city of Murcia, where he has undergone surgery overseen by Doctors Mariano de Prado and Pedro Luis Ripoll this Wednesday. According to a statement released by hospital, Achraf is expected to make a return to action in two to three months, provided there are no complications with his recovery.

Madrid may look for Hakimi's return

Last summer, the 20-year-old signed a loan deal with Borussia Dortmund for two seasons. But considering his exceptional form in the Bundesliga, Madrid may be tempted to bring him back to the Bernabéu, where he could provide cover for both the left and right back positions.

However if Zidane does want him to return, Los Blancos would have to negotiate some form of compensation with the German club in order to break the two-year loan agreement after just one season.

After promoting him from Real Madrid Castilla, Zidane gave Achraf his first team debut last season, in which he played 17 games, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

This season the full back has been a regular starter for Lucien Favre at Dortmund, providing three goals and seven assists in 28 appearences.
