Cüneyt Çakir has been designated to take charge of the Champions League second leg game between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on 17 April (21:00 CET), marking a return to the city where the Turkish official gained a level of notoriety in 2013.

In what would become Sir Alex Fersuson’s final Champions League game, Çakir sent off Manchester United winger Nani in the second half of the return leg against Real Madrid at Old Trafford and within 10 minutes the visitors had overturned a 1-0 deficit on the night through Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric to go through to the next round 3-2 on aggregate.

The Turkish official, 42, was also involved in a spot of VAR controversy earlier this season when Porto eliminated Roma at the Estádio do Dragão, denying the visitors a penalty without consultation but awarding one to the home side with the aid of the pitch-side monitors.

Çakir has overseen one Spurs game this season, the 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the group stages, and whistled Manchester City's 0-0 draw against Madrid in the 2015-16.

So far this season in all competitions, Çakir has brandished 123 yellow cards, four reds and awarded 12 penalties. In the Champions League he has been particularly prolific, booking 21 players and dismissing one for a double-caution. In that last 16 game, Çakir showed nine yellows and gave two penalties in 120 minutes as Porto beat Roma 3-1 on aggregate.
