REAL MADRID

Real Madrid will sell Ramos if it can generate cash

AS has learned that Real Madrid is willing to sell Sergio Ramos as long as the club can generate cash from his transfer.

Update:
Real Madrid will sell Ramos if it can generate cash
DIARIO AS

As a special guest on Spanish radio programme El Transistor on Monday evening, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez seemed to drop a hint that the club would be willing to sell its 33-year-old captain Sergio Ramos after 14 years at the club.

“It's impossible to let your captain leave for free, that would be setting a bad precedent,” Perez told host José Ramón de la Morena, after it had emerged that Ramos had asked for an easy move to China.

And AS has learned that Peréz's hints are, in fact, true: Madrid will sell Ramos as long as it can generate cash from his transfer. And the player and his agent and brother, René, already know this.

AS understands that after a meeting between Ramos, his agent, Peréz and lawyer Julio Senn, the Madrid captain and the president privately held separate talks for 15 minutes. And during that face-to-face, no solution was obtained to the discord that they have held since their fall-out after the shock defeat to Ajax in March, when Ramos told Peréz: "Pay me and I'll go."

Peréz rejected Ramos’ exit proposal

The offer from China that the player has proposed would not see Madrid make any money from his transfer, but would save the club the 50 million euros in gross salary that he is due to be paid over the remaining two years of his contract. But Peréz has rejected this option.

The relationship between Sergio Ramos and Florentino Peréz has been hanging by a thread since the latter presented an offer in 2015 from United.

Another option would be if Ramos can present an offer from a club willing to pay Madrid around 100 million euros. The Chinese club that wants Ramos will double his salary, but does not pay for transfers. But there are three European teams that could make a move for the Madrid captain, namely Juventus, Manchester United or PSG.

Peréz-Ramos relationship fractured since 2015

The leak from the Bernabéu – that the club partly blames him for their Champions elimination against Ajax because he missed the second leg after picking up a deliberate yellow in the first leg, so as to avoid suspension for the next round – has reached the ears of Ramos.

Asked about this leak on El Transistor, Peréz denied it. But the truth is that the relationship between the president and captain has been hanging by a thread since the latter presented an offer in 2015 from United, who were going to pay him 55 million euros net over five years.

Ramos getting ready for Spain

Yesterday, Ramos reappeared at Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground after having enjoyed a few days of rest, and did some ball work alone to get himself up to speed before meeting up with Spain for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Faroe Islands and Sweden in June.

Perhaps when those qualifiers are over, a clearer picture of Ramos' future may have emerged.
