Marcelo on the Mendy: 6 kilos dropped and a new six-pack

Real Madrid's Brazilian full-back is taking advantage of his holiday to get back into tip-top shape for the new season, as Ferland Mendy eyes his place.

There's nothing like having time on your hands to consider the future. And it would appear that Marcelo has done just that as he looks ahead to the new season with Real Madrid, realising that he'll need to be in top shape if he's got any chance of preventing new signing Ferland Mendy from taking the left-back role.

The 31-year-old Brazilian has taken note of Zidane's recommended dietary plan, and his off-season efforts appear to be paying dividends already. He has lost 6 kilograms and, as is clear from the photos doing the social media rounds, is now sporting a six-pack that most gym fanatics would be proud off.

After a poor season, Marcelo's change in mentality says a lot about his commitment to the team, especially as links away from the club have gone quiet. A similar effect was seen in teammate Karim Benzema over the past year, with esteemed chef Alberto Mastromatteo being brought in to deliver personalised menus each day, and a fitness workout that made such a striking difference.

Known for his lung-busting runs up and down the left flank, his ability to support attacks then recover in defence has been lacking in recent times, but this new look may be a sign that we can expect a return of this in the coming months. With Eden Hazard likely making runs ahead of him, the man from Rio de Janeiro may be looking to be a big part of his club churning out more success before he has to hang up his boots.
