Real Madrid: This year's Trofeo Bernabéu in danger of being cancelled
Diario AS understands that because of the ongoing renovation work at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, the summer tournament could be called off.
The 40th edition of the Trofeo Bernabéu, Real Madrid's annual summer showcase tournament, is in danger of being cancelled or at best, postponed this year. AS understands that due to the ongoing renovation work, which started at the Santiago Bernabéu last Monday, it will be difficult for the club to organize at game at their stadium this summer for safety concerns. Real Madrid could confirm during the next few days that this year's Trofeo Bernabéu will be suspended until another date is found. The tournament was first staged in 1979 in honour of the club's legendary president, who passed away the previous year.
Request submitted to RFEF
Construction work on the stadium is set to continue until the start of the new season and has even prompted Real Madrid to put in a request to the Spanish Football Federation to play their first three home game of 2019/20 away from home. The club estimates that the first phase of renovation work won't be completed until the end of September.
The draw for LaLiga 2019/20 season takes place on Thursday when we will find out whether the RFEF accept Madrid's petition or not. It's a change to the original plan which involved removing then replacing scaffolding so that official matches could be played at the Bernabéu. The club has since come to realize that such a solution is just not feasible. It wouldn't be the first time the Trofeo Bernabéu has been switched from August to another date or cancelled completely - the 2014 edition didn't take place due to Madrid's overbooked summer schedule.
