Real Madrid: Sergio Reguilón joins Sevilla on loan

The left-back joins Sevilla on a one-year loan without the option to buy him from Madrid. Signing the defender was one of Julen Lopetegui's personal requests.

Update:
Real Madrid: Sergio Reguilón joins Sevilla on loan

Sergio Reguilón is set to join Sevilla on loan for the new season. The 22-year-old left back will sign a one-year contract with the Andalucians, who will not have the option to buy him outright at the end of the loan deal. Reguilón was high on Julen Lopetegui's list of priorities and the deal will be made official by the end of the week - mostly likely before Thursday when Sevilla begin their pre-season.

Experience in LaLiga

Reguilón was hardly used when Lopetegui was in charge at Real Madrid but it was the Basque coach who pushed to bring him up into the first team squad for which the player remains extremely grateful. The defender feels that joining Sevilla presents him with a great opportunity to continue gaining experience in the top flight which will give him more status when he returns to Real Madrid next summer when he will be competing for a place with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy.

Reguilón doesn't figure in Zidane's plans at the moment but the club would rather he went out on loan than be sold. During his first season with the first team he surpassed all expectations and under Santiago Solari he managed to nudge Marcelo out of the team and onto the subs' bench. Last season he made 22 appearances, almost 1800 minutes playing time and made three assists. Best of all was that he showed no signs of being out of his depth and that character was what attracted a number of clubs - including Sevilla, where he will compete for a place with with Sergio Escudero.
