Leo Messi refused to receive his third-place medal after being sent off in Argentina's 2-1 win over Chile in the losing semi-finalists play-off at the Copa América 2019. The Barcelona star later spoke in the mixed zone to explain why he had stayed in the dressing room.

The sending off

Medel is always right at the limit. With a yellow that would have been the end of it for both of us, but well, maybe what I said recently had an impact. What's important is that the team finished well in the tournament. Maybe this was ordered [from above] and I ended up suffering because of what I said.

Not picking up his medal

We don't need to be part of the corruption that we've suffered at this tournament. We don't need to be part of the lack of respect we've suffered during this Copa América. We could have gone further, but they didn't let us be in the final.

The Argentina team's performance

I'm leaving relaxed, with my head held high and proud of this group that's given everything. I hope this group gets respect, they've got a lot to give.

The Copa América

The team showed a lot of personality, it's not easy to start with a loss (to Colombia) and a draw (against Paraguay). That made us stronger and we finished in a very positive manner.

The goal Messi set up for Agüero

We saw them protesting and there was a big gap and I was able to take the free-kick. Another time maybe they'd have been able to cut off the move, but this one carried on and finished with a goal.

The final: Brazil v Peru

The Copa is set up for Brazil, hopefully the referees and the VAR won't influence things and they let Peru compete, but I think that's unlikely.

Scaloni carrying on as Argentina coach

We got better and we found our rhythm. Him staying on to December gives stability to the side and players.
