Update:

Argentina’s meeting with Switzerland in the World Cup quarterfinals comes with plenty of storylines, and one of them is the man holding the whistle.

UEFA official João Pinheiro has been appointed to referee Saturday’s clash at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, taking charge of one of the biggest matches of his career as the defending champions chase another semifinal.

Who is João Pinheiro?

Pinheiro is one of Portugal’s leading referees and has become a familiar face in both the Portuguese Primeira Liga and UEFA competitions over the past few seasons. He has handled Champions League matches, international qualifiers and plenty of domestic fixtures.

The 2026 tournament is his first FIFA World Cup, but he is far from new to the biggest stages in European soccer.

Which World Cup games has João Pinheiro refereed?

This will be Pinheiro’s third match of the tournament.

He previously oversaw Switzerland’s group-stage meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina before taking charge of Canada’s round-of-32 victory over South Africa.

Now he steps into an even bigger spotlight with a place in the World Cup semifinals on the line.

Why is there extra attention on the Pinheiro and his team?

Pinheiro’s appointment comes just days after Argentina’s dramatic and controversial 3-2 comeback win over Egypt in the round of 16.

Egypt raced into a 2-0 lead before Argentina scored three late goals to turn the game around. A second-half Egyptian goal was also disallowed following a VAR review, sparking furious reactions after the final whistle.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan claimed both “internal factors on the pitch” and “external factors ahead of the game” had influenced the result, suggesting there had been pressure surrounding the officiating. FIFA has not indicated there was any wrongdoing.

With emotions already running high, Pinheiro and his officiating team will know every major decision is likely to come under intense scrutiny.
