Algeria secure spot kick win to set up Super Eagles semi-final
It's widely agreed by observers of the game that a tournament exit on penalty kicks is a cruel way to be eliminated from any competition. The pain is even more acute when a team exits undeservedly and Ivory Coast will point to a strong second half performance and domination of an extra time period with both sides tied at 1-1 in Suez.
Despite the 30 plus temperature in the Egyptian city both teams served up a fine game with Algeria dominating possession and Ivory Coast looking dangerous on the counter with Max Gradel particularly sharp for Les Elephants.
Former Valencia man Feghouli opened the scoring after 20 minutes with Les Fenics good value for their half time lead.
Two time CAN winners Ivory Coast were back in the tie with a delightful move which culminated in Aston Villa's Kodija slotting home to level things on the night. A further 30 minutes of muscle draining extra time failed to separate the sides and it was Serey Die who ultimately missed the final spot kick to see Algeria through.
The Desert Foxes now face the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Sunday's second semi final in Cairo with a 2100 CEST start.

Big responsibility for the keepers too...who will be the hero .... Ivory Coast's Gbohouo or Algerian veteran stopper M'Bolh...
Tired legs getting treatment as both sides select their nominated penalty takers. Huge responsibility for the selected men.
All over in Suez. Spot kicks it will be ....

Not a great night for the Crystal Palace man who started brightly but drifted out of the action as the game progressed.
Cornet on for Zaha (Ivory Coast)
This is a very tough game to call. Algeria have been in charge possession wise bit Ivory Coast do look dangerous on the break with pacy players. How much will Bounedjah rue that penalkty miss?
Ivory Coast to make a change as the Elephants get the action underway
That's the final whistle in Suez. 30' of extra time to try and separate Algeria and Ivory Coast. Things very finely balanced in the third quarter final and the first to go to extra time

Mahrez being swapped for Algeria. Ounas his replacement.
Algeria through and Gbohouo rushes off his line to clear. The Mazembe stopper seems to be in trouble after a collision with Mahrez. Play held up once again.
Guedioura tries a long range effort... the Ivorian keeper spills the ball but gathers second time.
Game still held up as the player seems okay to continue. Tiredness taking a toll now as the pace drops slightly...understandable given the 30 plus temperature

The Algeria No. 9 is almost in tears...distraught with his effort.
Fires the spot kick off the crossbar. Ivory Coast are still in the tie
Penalty awarded and Bounedjah to take...
For me .... the striker went looking for the spot kick albeit a clumsly challenge from the Ivorian keeper.
Gbohouo gets a yellow card.
Off we go again in Suez.
The players slowly make their way back to the pitch at the Suez Stadium. 45' separate Algeria from a place in Sunday's semi-final.
Half time perusal... Enjoy the gallery of the fans at CAN 2019, as always the most vibrant aspect of any Africa Cup of Nations are the supporters.
A very bright first 25' or so that tailed off slightly as tiredness kicked in. Algeria dominating but Ivory Coast are by no menas out of the reckoning with Max Gradel looking very bright for Les Elephants.

Max Gradel lloking bright tonight for Ivory Coast
The injured Attal replaced by Zeffane (Algeria)
Zaha and Bensebaini carded for their involvement in the pushiung and shoving
Sport of 'handbags' which leaves two men in green on the surface. The ref. now needs to impose himself before tempers fray.
Apart from an early dangerous delivery from Zaha, it's been a quiet sytart for the Crystal Palace man.
Attal seems to have fallen badly and leaves the pitch for attention.
Great burst from Attal into the opposition box and is brushed aside by Kanon. Algeria appeal for a penalty but the official awards a corner.
Jubilation for the Algeria fans
Excellent goal by Algeria with credit to Bensebaini who provided the assist.
Algeria enjoying the better of the possession but Ivory Coast enjoying the better of the scoring chances.
Free for Ivory Coast as Gradel is fouled but the free is wasted. Kanon latches onto a fine Bagayoko cross but pulls his effort wide. Impressive intensity from both sides despite the 32 degree temperature.
