Matthew McConaughey swaps Hollywood for the MLS
The Dazed and Confused, Oscar-winning actor was named as one of the new owners of Major League Soccer new franchise Austin FC who will debut in 2021.
The Major League Soccer is attracting new investors - particularly celebrities with film music and sports stars joining ownership groups over the past few months, and the latest franchise to add a big name star is Austin FC.
Two Oak Ventures, the expansion club's parent company, revealed several new additions to their ownership group, adding one of the most famous people of the city, 49-year-old Oscar-winner, Matthew McConaughey.
Austin FC will make their MLS debut in 2021, and through a statement, the actor spoke about his new venture into soccer: "Austin FC is more than a quality investment FOR Austin; it's a quality investment IN Austin. The most diverse and borderless game in the world is now coming to one of the most multicultural, creative, and diverse cities in the world. Austin FC is a healthy investment in our city's culture and future."
McConaughey will join technology entrepreneur Eddie Margain, president and chief commercial officer of Dell technologies Marius Haas and local energy executive Bryan Sheffield as the new Austin FC investors.
Austin FC CEO, Anthony Precourt welcomed his new franchise partners through a press release where he said; "it is my privilege to welcome my new partners to Austin FC, this group knows and loves the city of Austin and the beautiful game. I can't think of anyone better to help us realize our ambitions as a soccer club for this entire community."
Stars in the MLS
In July Houston Rockets all-star James Harden bought a minority stake of Houston Dynamo, also Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara joined the Seattle Sounders group.
Will Ferrell is part-owner of MLS leaders, LAFC, where Matthew McConaughey once attended a match as Ferrell's guest and is known the Texan native is an avid sports fan making him an excellent addition to Austin FC.
