Josef Martinez' goalscoring run has come to an end after the Atlanta United striker had to leave the game against the San Jose Earthquakes where the Five Stripes beat the Californian side 3-1.

Martinez was forced to be substituted after suffering a knee injury putting an end to the Venezuelan striker's consecutive games scoring streak, failing to break the world record set by Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi.

The Atlanta United striker had extended his goalscoring run to 15 games in which he had scored 21 of his 26 goals, matching Tor Henning Hamre record but still six games behind Lionel Messi's world record of 21 games, a record the Barcelona man set during the 2013-14 season scoring 33 goals in the process.

But Josef Martinez' straight games stretch is not the only record the Atlanta United striker might lose, as he may now be out of the MLS MVP reckoning, possibly unable to help his team in their pursuit of back-to-back MLS championships.
