Sweden vs Spain: match preview

Sweden host Spain with both nations eager to secure their place at Euro 2020 ahead of next month's final two qualifying matches. Spain top the group on 19 points and are the only team in the scetion which remain unbeaten. Sweden sit second on 14 points - just one point ahead of Romania who have a crunch meeting with the team in fourth Norway, who are not out of the running yet on 10 points.

A draw should be enough for Robert Moreno's Spain side to mathematically be assured of their place at next year's event. A Sweden victory would leave them requiring a win from November's trip to Bucharest to book their place at the finals. Both go into the game after a run of decent  results - Sweden lost to Spain and were held at home by Norway but have won three out of their last five outings; Spain have dropped just two points - against Norway on Saturday and have conceded just three goals in their last five qualifiers.

Sergio Ramos set a new appearances record at the weekend against Norway but he will sit this one out after picking up a booking in Oslo. He is the only player who misses the game through suspension. Forward Rodrigo was unable to complete Monday's session which means he is unlikely to figure in the starting XI. Robert announced on the eve of the game that he would be making a few changes to his side with Gerard Moreno and Pablo Sarabia in line to enter the team with Iñigo Martínez the likely substitute for the suspended Sergio Ramos in central defence.

As for the hosts, Janne Anderson has a full squad to pick his XI. All trained as normal on Monday - including Victor Lindelof who missed Saturday's 0-4 win against Malta.

The two countries have met 14 times prior to this week's match with Spain winning half of them; Sweden have taken the spoils three times and four matches have ended level. Curiously, the city of Solna witnessed Sweden's last victory over Spain - a 2-0 win back in October 2006 at the old Råsundastadion, long since demolished.
