In 2016, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin first mooted the idea of staging the Champions League final outside of Europe and now it appears that the continental governing body has settled on a year, a city and a stadium to do so.

According to sources speaking to market research company Morning Consult, UEFA wants to stage the biggest club game in world football in New York in 2024. The possibility of taking the Champions League final to the four corners of the glove crystallised after the 2018 final in Kiev, which was beset by complaints from both Real Madrid and Liverpool about the distances and costs for fans.

UEFA has been busily sounding out potential partners for the venture and looking into broadcast issues to stage the final in New York in conjunction with TEAM Marketing AG, the Swiss firm that handles UEFA’s commercial interests.

According to the same sources, a venue has already been settled upon: the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which is home to NFL teams New York Giants and New York Jets.
