RTVE won't bid for Super Cup broadcasting rights due to the event being held in Saudi Arabia
According to La SER, Spain's public broadcaster will not enter the auction for broadcasting rights for "humanitarian reasons" as TVE claim Saudi Arabia "violates rights".
According to Cadena SER, Spain's public-funded broadcaster Televisión Española will not bid to acquire the broadcasting rights for the Spanish Super Cup which will take place in Saudi Arabia on 8, 9 and 12 January in which Valencia and Real Madrid will meet in one semi-final and Barcelona and Atlético will play the other semi-final.
RTVE sources have confirmed to La SER that the reason the organization will be not be entering an auction for broadcasting right for the tournament, explaining that on humanitarian grounds, it would not "be ethical" to place a bid in order to show matches being played in a country which doesn't respect human rights or liberty of expression. TVE did broadbast last season's Spanish Super Cup final between Barcelona and Sevilla which was played in Tangier - the first time the contest had ever been played outside of Spain.
Today, RFEF president Luis Rubiales defended the Federation's decision to stage the domestic Super Cup in Saudi Arabia for the next three years in exchange for 120 million euros: "The Super Cup was dying on its knees, and we were unable to hold it in August as we usually do. The money isn't to build a luxury apartment, it will be used to finance women's football - who need it more than anyone. Of course money is important. No one can deny that. It's very important - but the money will be going to clubs in the Second and Third Division".
