The Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah plays host to the Madrid Derby as Real Madrid face Atlético Madrid in the final of the new-look Spanish Super Cup, which gets underway this Sunday, January 12, 2020 at 19:00 (CET). (Find out here what time the match starts where you are in the world)

Zinedine Zidane’s side have reached the final after their convincing 3-1 win over Copa del Rey holders Valencia on Wednesday, with goals coming from Toni Kroos, Isco and Luka Modric. The French coach will be expected to name the same starting XI against Atlético, with question marks only hanging over whether he will chose Luka Jovic or Rodrygo at number nine in the absence of the injured Karim Benzema.

Atlético had arguably the harder semi-final tie against LaLiga Champions Barcelona, who found themselves 2-1 up going into the final ten minutes in Jeddah on Thursday. However an 81st minute Álvaro Morata penalty followed by Ángel Correa’s winner five minutes later ensured a dramatic 3-2 victory for Diego Simeone’s side, who hadn’t beaten El Blaugrana since the second leg of the Champions League quarter final in 2015-16.

Having respectively seen off the Copa del Rey and LaLiga champions, Real and Atléti face off in a repeat of last season’s UEFA Super Cup final, which Atlético won 4-2 thanks to extra-time goals from Saúl and Koke.

The last time the two sides met in the domestic Super Cup was in August, 2014. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Bernabéu, with goals from James Rodriguez and Raúl Garcia, a lone Mario Mandzukic strike in the second leg at the Vincente Calderón gave Los Rojiblancos a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Now, over five years on, these two teams lock horns in the very different setting of the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, where both sides will be as keen as ever to claim bragging rights over their fierce city rivals after their last meeting ended in a 0-0 draw back in September.
