Salamanca skipper overjoyed at "incredible" Real Madrid draw

The Spanish television coverage pans to live shots of the Unionistas Salamanca squad, who, shall we say, are pleased with the draw.

"We wanted this, and it's incredible," says Salamanca captain Piojo. "This club didn't exist six years ago, and now we're facing Real Madrid.

"It's a dream and a fitting reward for us, we deserve it more than anyone."

Copa del Rey third-round draw: how and where to watch

If you'd like have eyes on the balls as they are plucked from the hats, you may wish to avail yourself of our useful guide on how and where to watch the Copa del Rey third-round draw.

When will the third-round ties be played?

The ties will be played next midweek, so Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 January. A reminder that, as part of the changes made to this year's Copa del Rey, they will be played in single-match format, with only the semi-finals held over two legs.

In each case, the club in the lower division will be at home. If both teams play in the same league, the home side will be determined by the order in which the balls came out of the hat.

Copa del Rey

Copa del Rey third-round draw: How will it work?

There will be four pots:

Pot 1: the four Spanish Super Cup clubs

Pot 2: the 14 other Primera División sides

Pot 3: the six Segunda División teams

Pot 4: the eight Segunda División B clubs

The four Spanish Super Cup teams in Pot 1 are guaranteed to be drawn with one of the eight Segunda División B sides in Pot 4, the remaining four of which will then be paired with a top-flight team from Pot 2.

The six Segunda División teams in Pot 3 are also assured of a tie against a side from Primera, with the four left over top-tier clubs then drawn among themselves.

Segunda still outnumbered by Segunda B

It has been a rougher ride for the Segunda División clubs in the Copa del Rey: just six of the initial 22 remain. Though it's true that they were well outnumbered by Segunda B sides from the off, it is striking that, with the Copa now two rounds in, the tournament's third-tier contingent remains stronger.

Badalona Getafe

All but two top-flight clubs remain in the Copa draw

So far, this season's Copa del Rey has been a relatively smooth ride for Spain's top-flight sides, with only two failing to negotiate the first two hurdles.

Alavés were well beaten by Terecera División club Real Jaén in the first round in December, going down 3-1 in Andalusia, while this weekend saw Segunda B Badalona secure a 2-0 win at the Estadi Municipal to dump José Bordalás' high-flying Getafe out at the second stage.

Copa del Rey third round: who's in the draw?

The following 32 sides will be in the hat at the Spanish Football Federation's headquarters in Las Rozas, just outside Madrid:

18 Primera División clubs:

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético, Valencia, Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Athletic, Villarreal, Granada, Levante, Osasuna, Betis, Valladolid, Eibar, Celta, Mallorca, Leganés and Espanyol

Six Segunda División clubs:

Real Zaragoza, Mirandés, Rayo, Tenerife, Elche and Girona

Eight Segunda División B clubs:

Ebro, Ibiza, Badajoz, Badalona, Cultural Leonesa, Recreativo, Unionistas and Logroñés

Setién to be unveiled as Valverde replacement today

Super Cup exit sees Valverde given Barcelona boot

It was Real Madrid who won the inaugural four-team Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, beating city rivals Atlético on penalties in the final on Sunday - and it was a competition that has led Barcelona to dispense with the services of their head coach, Ernesto Valverde, following the Catalans' late semi-final collapse against Atleti.
