Atlético Madrid stun Liverpool in Champions League last-16 first leg

Atlético Madrid beat Liverpool in the Champions League

Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool live online: second half

90+4

And that's it! Atlético will take a 1-0 advantage to Anfield for the second leg after Saúl's third-minute strike proved enough to separate the sides on the night.

90+4

Oblak is taken out in an aerial challenge and takes his time getting the ball back into play. Atlético have the ball and another wild shot flies over the bar.

90+3

Vrsaljko! What a header from the Atlético defender to deny Firmino at the far post.

90+2

Costa gifts Liverpool a free kick in their own half.

90+1

Diego Costa lashes a shot wide from considerable distance and doesn't look happy with himself.

90

Four minutes of added time...

88

Vitolo is pulled up for a foul on Van Dijk, who was doing a good job of protecting the ball.

86

Liverpool win a throw out on the right. Time running short for Klopp's side, but then as we saw last season, a 1-0 lead is no guarantee of going through against the European champions.

85

Jan Oblak hasn't had much to do this evening but he plucks a cross-shot out of the air and drops to the turf just in case.

84

Atlético work the ball into the area where Marcos Llorente is waiting, but the flag is up.

82

Lodi breaks into midfield and tries to thread a ball through to Costa. Liverpool cut it out and head up the other end but Atlético clear.

80

Ouch! Diego Costa is taken out by Fabinho in midfield. That was a challenge we are legally obliged to describe as "robust."

78

And the Liverpool captain is unable to continue. He passes the armband to James Milner as the veteran midfielder comes on.

77

Problems for Liverpool as Henderson goes down with what looks like a muscle problem.

76

And the crowd go wild as Diego Costa makes his long-awaited return from injury. Ángel Correa heads off.

75

Henderson bursts into the area and appeals for a penalty against Thomas but the ball clearly hit the Atleti man in the face.

74

Llorente charges upfield and buys his side some time. Simeone on the touchline is exorting the crowd to make as much noise as possible. They respond in kind.

72

Henderson! Close from the Liverpool captain, whose little flick narrowly avoids the inside of Jan Oblak's far post.

71

Oxlade-Chamberlain is on and it's Mo Salah who sees his number come up! The Egyptian does not look amused as he heads off.

70

Lodi! The Brazilian flashes a shot across the face of his compatriot's goal. Alisson looked to have it covered but it wasn't a bad effort.

69

And that's the end of Morata's evening as he makes way for Vitolo.

67

Morata! What a chance for the Atlético striker, who makes a complete mess of it and ends up kicking the ball onto his own feet as he slipped in the area.

66

Bold stuff from Llorente as he plants a header back towards his own goal with Salah in pursuit. We're not sure Savic was entirely impressed with that.

64

A big cheer from the home fans as Diego Costa warms up on the touchline. Correa is off temporarily after a knock...

62

Liverpool are in total control of the ball but Atlético have closed ranks again at the back and it's pretty sterile possession at the moment for the visitors.

59

Liverpool go route one this time but Origi runs it out.

58

The home side will be afforded a breather as Gomez takes out Morata in midfield.

57

The Atlético defence are really under the cosh now and increasingly desperate clearances are the order of the day.

54

Liverpool are knocking at the door and Atlético are very much on the back foot here at the moment.

53

Free kick to Liverpool. It's taken quickly to Salah but the Atlético defence are out quickly to thwart the danger.

51

Salah! So close for Liverpool! The Egyptian rises at the far post and nods just wide. Oblak may have had it covered but it flashes inches past his upright.

49

It's worked into the box but Wijnaldum appears to handle it. The ref signals a free kick.

49

Corner to the visitors...

48

Atlético get into a great position after some neat passing but Vrsaljko gets in a tangle and Liverpool escape.

47

Lodi attempts a Zidane-esque pirouette on the far side and trips over his own feet.

46

We're back underway!

And Origi replaces Mané for the visitors. More obvious that decision. He was lucky to make it to half time.

Marcos Llorente is on for Thomas Lemar... must be an injury as he did plenty of good pressing in the first half.

Apparently this is only the second time during Jürgen Klopp's entire Liverpool career that his side have failed to muster a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes of a game, which is testament to Atlético's defensive solidity this evening.

A whopping 75 percent of the ball was Liverpool's in the opening 45 but the visitors only produced three shots, none of which were on target. Oblak's hands have yet to be warmed.

45+1

Vrsaljko goes down clutching his face after a challenge with Mané, who is on a yellow... the ref keeps his cards in his pocket though and blows for the half!

45

One minute added...

44

Correa goes into the book for needlessly clattering into Henderson.

43

Salah is dispossessed while running away from goal. That's how ferocious the Atlético press is. With most sides you'd expect them to drop off at some stage, but not when Simeone is on the touchline.

41

Fabinho looks to release Salah but gets the delivery wrong and it's straight out for a throw.

40

Mané finds his way into the book for an elbow on Vrsaljko.

39

Gomez looks unimpressed as he is pulled up for a foul on Correa. There wasn't much in it to be fair to the former Charlton defender.

37

And it's an awkward one but falls kindly for Morata, who whacks it to safety.

37

Another Liverpool corner...

36

The visitors are starting to find some gaps in the Atleti back line now. A low cross evades everyone in the area and Vrsaljko wisely avoids it on the far side.

35

Lovely from Liverpool, who thread a path through Atleti's massed defensive ranks. Salah pulls the trigger but it whacks Felipe on the head and pings out for a corner.

Some 30 minutes stats. Liverpool with the vast majority of the ball. Atlético with the only one that really matters, Saúl's early strike.

Some lovely control from Salah but the close attention of Savic forces the Egyptian away from goal.

29

Goal kick to the home side as another Liverpool effort threatens the fans in the upper tier. Oblak will happily watch those sail over his bar all evening.

27

Thomas lets fly from distance - he's got a pretty decent track record at the spectacular but that one was never going to trouble Alisson.

26

Salah! The ball is in the back of the net after a defensive error that will have Simeone fuming anyway, but the flag is up.

25

Morata! The Spain striker is through and thinks about shooting with his left, then checks and has a go with his right, hitting it straight at Alisson.

24

Salah is incredulous as he is pulled up for a foul after seemingly winning the ball fair and square. The ref is unmoved though.

23

Robertson delivers but it's a poor free kick and fails to clear the first man.

22

Free to Liverpool as Morata floors Fabinho. Decent position out on the right...

20

What a delivery from Lodi! And what a response from Robertson, who swings a leg out to divert the ball away from the onrushing Morata! That would probably have been number two but for the Scotsman.

19

Liverpool go all the way back to Alisson as Atlético apply the press. This is a proper Simeone performance from the hosts so far.

17

A nice passage of passing opens up a chance to cross for Liverpool but Felipe is there to head it clear.

15

Liverpool have a throw as Correa fails to control a regulation ball. Atlético seem happy enough to soak up the pressure for now. They're camped in their own half.

13

Another woeful attempt from Alexander-Arnold flies out high and none too handsome. The England international's range finder is not working at the moment.

11

Firmino with some neat footwork on the far side but it's to no avail as Atlético hack it clear.

10

Klopp's side go from side to side as they seek a route towards Jan Oblak's goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold sees something nobody else does and has a pop from distance but it's well wide.

8

Liverpool with a long spell of possession but the visitors can't pick a way through Atlético's back line.

6

The Metropolitano is in full voice as Correa breaks down the left. He squares but there's nobody there to apply the finishing touch. As it turns out, he was offside anyway.

5

VAR has a look but finds nothing wrong in the build-up. The goal stands it's the perfect start for Atlético!

4

Liverpool defence are caught napping at a corner and the ball finds its way to the feet of the canterano, who slams it home from close range!

4

Goooooooooooooooooool! Atlético take the lead through Saúl!

3

Chance for Atlético! Lodi delivers a lovely ball into the area and Morata gets a head to it but can't guoide the effort on target!

2

Huge cheers as Morata dispossesses Gomez but the ref blows for a foul against the Atlético striker.

We're off!

The anthem is on, the teams are coming out and we're about to get underway!

Liverpool meanwhile are on course for an unbeaten season in the Premier League as they chase the Liverpudlian holy grail but they have not been so imposing in European competition, being beaten by Napoli and held to a draw by the Italians in the group stage.

Since reaching two finals in 2014 and 2016 things have not gone terribly well for Atlético in the Champions League. The last time they got through a knock-out stage round was in 2016-17, when they beat Leicester City over two legs.

The warm-ups are underway at the Metropolitano.

The last time Liverpool were in Madrid they took the Champions League trophy back with them... the side that day is identical to the one Klopp is fielding this evening with the exception of Joe Gomez, who comes in for Joel Matip.

Diego Costa hasn't played since he managed 10 minutes against Espanyol on 11 November. We imagine he'll be pretty eager to get out there this evening and cause Liverpool's back four some problems.

Anna Bosch. Spanish state broadcaster TVE's foreign affairs correspondent, is not impressed with the travelling supporters on the Madrid Metro.

And here are Klopp's substitutes: Adrián, Milner, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Origi, Matip.

Here's Atlético's bench, with the return of Diego Costa the good news for the Rojiblancos:  Adán, Giménez, Hermoso, Llorente, Vitolo, Carrasco, Diego Costa.

And why exactly is Simeone commonly known as El Cholo? The Atlético manager explained his nickname in a recent interview.

"It cannot be denied that Liverpool are incredibly impressive. They will serve as a stern test for Cholismo – Diego Simeone’s dogged style of play that, today, has been called into the question for the first time after so many years." Alfredo Relaño believes this evening is the perfect stage for Simeone to reignite Atlético's season.

Mo Salah is one of the undoubted stars of this Liverpool side but how different things might have been for Atlético in the 2014 and 2016 finals had they had the Egyptian in their ranks. It wasn't for a lack of trying...

And here's Liverpool's starting XI, which contains no surprises. The famous front three of Firmino, Salah and Mané will be out to wreak their usual havoc

The Atlético XI is out and Morata and Correa will lead the line with support out wide from Koke and Thomas Lemar.

And he's quite right, as the reception for the Atlético team bus shows...

Meanwhile, Simeone said that although his side are finding it difficult to get results at the moment, he is expecting a tremendous atmosphere at the Metropolitano this evening.

You can read Klopp's pre-match press conference in full here. This will be the first time he and Simeone have gone head to head in their managerial careers.

Jürgen Klopp's side are on something of an unbeaten run at the moment and chasing AC Milan's record of 58 games set between 1991-93, but the Liverpool boss is taking nothing for granted against Diego Simeone's Atlético, a task he described as  Atlético Madrid "one of the most difficult things that can happen to a footballer in his life".
