MLS set to resume the league towards the end of June
The Major League Soccer is working on several plans to resume the 2020 campaign. The season was put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.
On 6 May, the majority of the Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs returned to training with players taking part in individual workouts - the exceptions were LA Galaxy and LAFC, both of whom are still waiting to receive permission from city authorities to return to work.
Earlier this week, MLS officials proposed that the season could resume in Orlando, Florida behind closed doors at the Disney sports complex and other stadiums in the city. According to multiple reports, the MLS is planning to return to action as early as 22 June.
Also the MLS announced that the players have to train individually or in small groups until 1 June and after that the coaches can do entire sessions with the entire team ahead of the start of the campaign, which was stopped after the first two weekends of action in April because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“MLS players may continue to use outdoor team training fields for voluntary individual workouts, in compliance with local health authorities and government orders, that were created in consultation with medical and infectious disease experts. MLS training facilities remain closed to all players with the exception of those requiring medical treatment or rehabilitation, under the direction of the team medical staff, that cannot be performed from the safety of their residence,” the MLS said in a statement,
The proposal to play in Orlando has been submitted
According to the Sounders general manager and president of soccer Garth Lagerwey, the 26 clubs of the MLS have been discussing several options to resume the current season. Lagerwey said that the ‘Orlando plan’ has already been submitted to all the teams in the league.
“This is the one that’s been the most talked about and not just because of MLS, the NHL is contemplating it, baseball did some version of this, and the NBA,” Lagerwey said of the other professional leagues looking into sequestering their teams to play truncated seasons.
