LALIGA
Barcelona player ratings vs Mallorca
Lionel Messi, as per usual, stole the show with a goal and a pair of assists. Barcelona had a handy night at the office with some very nice performances.
Ter Stegen: asked to do more with his feet than with his hands but competent in both areas. Made a couple of nice stops from Kubo and kept a clean sheet on his return. Probably unfair to use the word 'competent' in reference to his passing as he offers so much to Setién's side with his ability to pick a pass. Good return to action - 8.
Jordi Alba: finish his goal perfectly as he remained calm and collects as he closed in on goal. Griezmann did not cramp his style and he was able to play freely on the wing. Booked and will miss Leganés but will be back for the Sevilla game. Might have been his smartest move of the game if it wasn't for the goal - 7.
Piqué: limped his way through some of the second half but solid before that and when called upon. Played beside a rookie in Ronald Araujo and neither had much problem although Piqué started a little slow. Looked to have a good understanding with his new partner at the back. Nothing out of the ordinary even if Mallorca looked dangerous on a couple of occasions - 7.
Araujo: his debut could not have gone better. Serious and accomplished in everything he did. Looks to have a very bright future ahead of him in the first team even if more fierce battles lay ahead. He almost scored too but his effort ended up hitting the post - 8.
Sergi Roberto: Leo Messi almost got tired of feeding him the ball on the right. The right-back was free almost ever time the Argentine looked up. Not precise in his delivery but his willingness to push forward stood out and the timing of his runs was very good - 7.
Sergio Busquets: very good game from the veteran defensive midfielder. Knew what was required of him time and again to control the base of midfield and found teammates regularly in better positions. Subbed off in the last 20 minutes with Setien keeping him fresh for future games - 7.
Vidal: scored with his first touch of the ball. Played just 45 minutes but did enough in that first half to convince everyone of his merit in this team. Broke lines and always willing to press and chase the ball. Adds energy to this team when they need it and even sometimes when they don't - 7.
De Jong: one of De Jong's better games in a Barcelona shirt. He stole the ball from Kubo to set up the first goal. His performance can sometimes be hot and cold but his presence in the middle more often than not offers balance to the team. Looked more comfortable today than on other occasions. Subbed off late with some muscle pain but Setien says it's nothing important - 7.
Messi: spectacular from the captain despite concern over his availability in the last few days. Provided a couple of very nice assists and always looked a threat. The beauty tonight was that his teammates helped him out and made lifer easier for him. Deserved his goal late on too and took it well - 9.
Griezmann: The French attacker started as the striker but didn't have much say on the game. Adds more defensively than he does in attack as he is alert and always willing to chase opponents deep into his own half. Moved well in attack at times but still not as involved as he or Barcelona might like - 6.
Braithwaite: played on the left and while his role was a little detached to begin with, he was involved in a couple of nice attacks. Took his goal with confidence. It was his first in a Barça shirt. Had a another very good chance from a Messi pass but send it milimeters wide. He is proving to be a very capable back-up to Suárez when needed - 8.
SUBSTITUTES:
Rakitic: came on at the break for Vidal. Covered well and helped out in the middle. That was his 300th game for Barcelona, a quiet one by all measures - 6.
Luis Suárez: returned to the field five months after his knee surgery. The Uruguayan was his typical self and came close to scoring. Had to settle for an assist to Messi - 6.
Semedo: came on late and with Mallorca struggling to find a way through.
Arthur: added an extra bit of control in the middle.
Junior: played the last few minutes but hardly contributed.
