REAL MADRID

Real Madrid: Sergio Ramos has scored more goals than Iniesta, Busquets and Puyol combined

The Madrid captain was on target in the first game back against Eibar - his 92nd for the club - more than Iniesta (57), Busquets (15) and Puyol (19) all together.

Update:

Sergio Ramos continues adding to his status as one of the true greats in Real Madrid history. Especially in an area which most defenders tend not to be so prolific - scoring goals. The Real Madrid captain brought up his 92nd goal for the club against Eibar after being played in by Eden Hazard. It was his eighth goal of the season which makes him the team's second top scorer behind Benzema who is on 19.

Ramos, 116 goals for club and country... and counting

He is now just eight goals short of a century of goals for Madrid - his tally is more than Iniesta, Busquets and Puyol combined. Iniesta hit 57 goals for Barça in 674 games, Busquets, a defensive midfielder scored 15 in 569 appearances while Carles Puyol ended with 19 goals in 593 games for Barça. In total, they have 91 goals between them. And Ramos edges even further ahead if we include the goals he has scored for Spain - he has 21 goals in 170 games at full international level while Iniesta scored 13 (including, it has to be said, the most important and historic goal ever for La Roja, against the Netherlands to win the World Cup in 2010). And if we also count the three goals Ramos scored while he was still at Sevilla his tally as a professional stands at 116, an incredible figure for a defender in any of Europe's major leagues.

LaLiga's top scoring defenders

Ramos has now equalled Ronald Koeman as the top scoring defender in the history of LaLiga  with 67 goals, but only 11 of them have been from the penalty spot while Koeman, a spot-kick specialist, hit 46. Ramos has gone past Fernando Hierro who scored 51 during his career (although he scored an additional 54 when playing as a midfielder) and the 46 which Roberto Carlos scored.

It's little wonder that, for all that, Ramos remains first choice in the side, despite his age (34). Emilio Butragueño noted after the Eibar game: “Renewing his contract? We want Sergio to stay here for many years. He's a great leader, he's our captain, a legend. We're delighted with him and it's a honour to have him as one of our players”.
