Google postpones U.S. office reopening to September as virus cases spike
Alphabet Inc's Google said late on Tuesday it was delaying the reopening of its U.S. offices by around two months because of a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in some states.
All of Google's U.S. offices will now remain closed at least until Sept. 7, Google spokeswoman Katherine Williams claimed.
Google said in late May it would reopen buildings in more cities at roughly 10% of their capacity beginning July 6 and scale it up to 30% in September, if conditions permitted.
Williams confirmed a Bloomberg report that cited an internal memo to employees sent by a Google executive.
Inovio's COVID-19 vaccine candidate shows promise in small early-stage trial
An experimental coronavirus vaccine developed by Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc showed promise and was found to be safe in an early-stage human trial, the company said on Tuesday.
The vaccine, one of 17 being tested in humans and part of the Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed program, induced immune responses in 34 of the 36 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 50 years, Inovio said.
The company, however, did not disclose more details on the exact response the vaccine induced, saying the full data will be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal later.
Shares of the company fell 10.1% to $28.49 as Wall Street analysts said the initial data provided only a limited look into the vaccine's effects.
Immune responses in the study were measured by the vaccine's ability to generate binding antibodies, or virus-neutralizing antibodies, and T-cell responses, two metrics considered vital for a successful vaccine.
“The idea that somehow he didn’t know or isn’t being briefed, it is a dereliction of duty if that is the case. ... If he was briefed and nothing was done about this, that’s a dereliction of duty,” said Biden.

In Nuevo León, Mexico, anyone who knowingly has Covid-19 and puts others at risk could face up to three years in jail. “The use of face masks is compulsory,” Manuel de la O Cavazos, state health secretary explained on Tuesday. Any infected person who endangers others or does not comply with the state’s stay-at-home orders would face a fine of 34,752 pesos and three months to three years in prison.
By Tuesday, Mexico had registered 220,657 positive cases of Covid-19 with 27,121 deaths and 170,147 people having recovered from the virus.
US buys up world stock of Covid-19 drug Remdesivir
The US has bought up virtually all the stocks for the next three months of one of the two drugs proven to work against Covid-19, leaving none for the UK, Europe or most of the rest of the world, The Guardian reports.

The European Union has excluded the United States from its initial 'safe list' of countries from which the bloc will allow non-essential travel from Wednesday. The 27-member bloc gave majority approval on Tuesday to leisure or business travel from 14 countries beyond its borders, the Council of the EU, which represents EU governments.
The countries are Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. China has also been provisionally approved, although travel would only open up if Chinese authorities also allowed in EU visitors.
Reciprocity is a condition of being on the list. Russia, Brazil and Turkey, along with the United States, are among countries whose containment of the virus is considered worse than the EU average, and so will have to wait at least two weeks for approval.

Facebook stepped up the battle against the amorphous anti-government "boogaloo" movement on Tuesday, banning accounts of adherents who encouraged violence during recent anti-racism protests across the United States.
The social media company for the first time designated a subset of boogaloo followers as a dangerous organization, marking them for the same sanctions Facebook applies to 250 white supremacist groups and organizations it categorizes as supporting terrorism around the world.
The move came four days after Attorney General William Barr established a Justice Department task force to counter violent anti-government extremists including boogaloo as well as the left-wing antifa movement.

A nationwide mask order could save the U.S. economy $1 trillion, or a 5 percent loss in gross domestic product (GDP) caused by renewed lockdown measures, according to a study conducted by investment bank, Goldman Sachs.
Research from the investment bank found that wearing face coverings has significant and sizable economic outcomes. Analysts estimated that a national mandate would increase the wearing of face masks among 15 percent of Americans, which would effectively cut an increase in new daily cases of the virus by 1 to 0.6 percentage points.
