Madhya Pradesh imposes a ten-day lockdown in Bhopal

Amidst the steady rise in Covid-19 cases in the city, Madhya Pradesh state's government decided to impose lockdown for 10 days in Bhopal starting 24 July.

In light of the constant increase in Covid-19 cases in the city, the government of Madhya Pradesh announced on Wednesday that a lockdown will be imposed in Bhopal for 10 days as of 24 July in its bid to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, assuring people that essential goods will be continuously provided during that period.

Bhopal reported the highest number of cases in the states with 157 new cases taking the overall tally in the city up to 4,669 since the start of the pandemic, of which 144 people have succumbed to the infection.

Constant supply of essential goods

Home Minister Narottam Mishra stated: “In view of the prevalence of Covid-19 in Bhopal, a decision has been taken to impose lockdown for 10 days beginning 8 pm on Friday (July 24)", while Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured people in a tweet that there will be an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities like fruits and vegetables, medicines, milk, urging people to follow the rules set by the authorities to combat Covid-19.

Mishra also added that interstate travel to and from Bhopal will require an e-pass like the one that was used when the lockdown was initially imposed in Indian states and cities.

Since just the beginning of July, Bhopal city has reported 1,880 new confirmed cases.
