Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu rejected the chance to sign Alphonso Davies before he went on to join Bayern Munich because he was from Canada, according to information from TUDN. The broadcasters said that Barcelona legend Hirsto Stoichkov, who also works at the Univision-owned network, spoke to Bartomeu about Davies but since he was from Canada he was not a fit for Barcelona.

Sweet revenge

Alphonso Davies had one of the games of his short career last night as Bayern Munich demolished Barcelona 8-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. His performance was so brilliant that everyone was talking about it, including Real Madrid’s veteran defender Marcelo, not too long ago considered the best left-back in the world.

His best play of the match came on the 62nd minute when the game was 4-2. The Canadian youngster dribbled past Messi, Vidal and left Semedo looking foolish as he assisted Joshua Kimmich, who scored the fifth goal of the game. It was downhill from that point on for Barcelona who ended up having their worst result in the history of the UEFA Champions League.

After the game the 19-year-old published a picture on his Instagram page hugging Lionel Messi, one of his idols growing up, and he wrote: “Amazing performance from the team last night.” Shortly after the publication, Marcelo commented on the picture saying: “You bring joy to my eyes when I see you play.”

Davies is considered right now, along with Andy Robertson from Liverpool, as one of the best left-backs in the world. He came from Vancouver Whitecaps and joined the German giants in 2019.
