The UN launched a fund-raising campaign seeking financial support worth 565 million dollars to aid Lebanon following the catastrophic explosion that took place in Beirut's port 10 days ago claiming at least 171 lives and leaving more than 6500 injured.

The UN released a statement explaining that they have established a humanitarian appeal "aimed at raising 565 million dollars, to help Lebanon move from immediate life-saving to the phase of recovery and reconstruction, and eventually to the long-term economic prosperity".

Food security first on the agenda for Lebanon

The statement further explained that this fund will be allocated to help achieve food security through the immediate delivery of meals and food rations in order to secure a stable national grain supply. The fund will also be used in the healthcare sector to rehabilitate many affected health facilities and provide medical teams and essential medicines.

In addition, this money will also be used to accommodate homeless families whose houses were destroyed by the explosion and reconstruct damaged houses and facilities, along with providing clean drinking water and fixing the sewage system.

Najat Roshdi, the UN coordinator in Lebanon said that "The mission of rebuilding people's lives and recovering from that damage has just started".

She added, "I call on the international community to show commitment toward Lebanon and show the same generosity Lebanon has always shown to Palestinian and Syrian refugees".
