Bayern Munich and Sevilla will lock horns in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup in Budapest on Thursday 24 September, in what will serve as a curtain raiser for European club competitions for the 2020-21 season.

The match is a particular milestone in the age of coronavirus as there will be up to 20,000 fans in attendance, which will be a strange sight for TV viewers who have become accustomed to watching games in empty stadiums.

Champions League winners Bayern Munich – who defeated PSG 1-0 in the final after trouncing Barcelona 8-2 on route in the last 16 – have enjoyed a 27-game unbeaten run that started in January and will be favourites for the tie.

However, Hans-Dieter Flick’s men will be taking nothing for granted against a dogged Sevilla side, who saw off Manchester United and Inter Milan to lift a record sixth Europa League title in August.

Bayern will be without the injured Tanguy Nianzou and Kingsley Coman, who is sidelined due to coronavirus, while David Alaba is also a doubt. Sevilla, meanwhile, have a clean bill of health heading into the game, with their Europa League final two-goal hero Luuk de Jong set to lead the line from the front.

Bayern vs Sevilla: head to head

The last time the two sides met was in the 2017-18 Champions League quarterfinals, with the clubs playing out a scoreless draw in Munich in the first leg before Bayern won the second leg 2-1 in Seville.

This will Bayern’s fifth Super Cup final tie, while Sevilla are set to make their sixth appearance. With one title each to their name, both clubs will be looking to join Juventus, Valencia, Anderlecht and Ajax by becoming two-time winners of the trophy.
