LAFC fall to 2-1 home defeat to San Jose Earthquakes

Prior to the game against San Jose Earthquakes, Los Angeles Football Club were in seventh position in the eastern conference with 10 games left of the regular season. LAFC have been very inconsistent since the MLS season resumed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

LAFC want to move up the table

The team managed by Bob Bradley had defeated Vancouver 6-0 at the Banc of California on Wednesday and they wanted to add to that victory against San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night. LAFC took the lead with a goal from Mark-Anthony Kaye towards the end of the first half, giving the home team confidence to return to the pitch for the second half.

As is usual from LAFC, they had the majority of the possession with 53% but only had three shots on target. The home team struggled to open up San Jose, who did a good job in keeping the ball as far away from their goalkeeper James Marcinkowski.

The Earthquakes had less possession but were a constant threat to Pablo Sisniega, who saw eight shots on target during the entire game. San Jose’s coach, Matías Almeyda, made four changes during the second 45 minutes that would give the team the three points.

Late goals

In the 80th minute Shea Salinas scored the equalizer for San Jose, who are currently the worst team in the eastern conference, which already seemed like a victory for them. But Almeyda didn’t want to leave with one point - he was looking for the victory.

When it seemed that the game was going to end with a draw, Jackson Yueill scored the second goal for the Earthquakes in stoppage time, surprising LAFC, who saw how they just lost a game that seemed to be under control.

With this result, LAFC remain in seventh position with 18 points, while San Jose could still make a playoff run with nine games left of the regular season. The Earthquake’s next game is at home against LA Galaxy on 3 October.
