Borja Mayoral has decided it would be in his best interested to leave Real Madrid. Luka Jovic featured in the starting XI for the second consecutive time last night and the Serbian, who Madrid are keen to send out on loan but have not found any takers, is blocking Mayoral's path to gaining regular playing time with the first team. The Parla-born striker had originally made up his mind to remain with Madrid because Zidane had told him that he would be counting on him, while the club was looking for a club to take Jovic on loan. One of the two has to leave and it looks like it will be Mayoral

Mayoral cannot see himself as Madrid's third choice striker

The transfer deadline is days away and Jovic has not found a new club. That is not what worries Mayoral, as Zidane has told him that he will be needed. Nor is the competition for a place an issue. What is a concern for Mayoral is being relegated to the position of third choice striker because that means he will hardly play at all. After two good seasons on loan at Levante, playing regularly, he doesn't want his career to be set back.

Jovic was in the starting line-up against Valladolid, for the second game running and that is what prompted Mayoral to reopen his operation to leave. His agent flew out to Italy today to meet up with Roma officials and negotiate a possible transfer.

That does not mean that Mayoral will definitely leave, because Madrid's priority is finding a club to take Jovic on loan. But it shows that Mayoral is not prepared to spend most of this season on the bench. Roma's project is an interesting one and he has decided to find out what they have to offer him…

Mayoral will be out of contract with Real Madrid in 2021, which means that he will have a greater say in his own future. The formula which he would use to leave would be to renew with Madrid then join Roma on loan with the Italians holding an option to buy him for 15 million euros next summer.
