Jill Ellis could become first woman to manage MLS team

Jill Ellis managed the United States women’s national team from 2014 to 2019 and during that time she won the World Cup twice (2015 and 2019). Her record with the USWNT was 106-7-19 and now she is on the list of candidates to take over the DC United coach position.

First woman coach in MLS

According to The Athletic, Ellis is a top candidate to take the job and if that were to occur she would become the first woman to coach a team in Major League Soccer. Other candidates on the list are Jason Kreir, who has already managed Real Salt Lake and New York City FC, and former Schalke 04 manager David Wagner.

Sources for The Athletic also reported that the coaching search has only just begun so it may take some time to know who will take over the vacant spot ahead of the 2020 season. Since stepping down from the USWNT after winning the 2019 World Cup Ellis has been working with the US Soccer Federation as an ambassador.

Her focus as an ambassador has been on increasing the number of women in the coaching ranks, so a manager spot in MLS would be a huge stepping stone for that program. DC United decided to sack Ben Olsen due to the teams poor results this season.
