Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid: how it happened

Casemiro post-match:

"They got two chances and scored twice. We fought until the end and that is the sign of champions. We never gave up. I always believe in the work of the group. Karim scored a screamer and this is the way. We played well. We worked hard tonight. We'll always go until the end and we've done really well. This crest always requires maximum points and yes we have to improve but every game is difficult."

Madrid left it so late but got there in the end through Casemiro's effort in the 93rd minute. Los Blancos never gave up. Gladbach will be sick, they defender for their lives.

FT: Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-2 Real Madrid

Casemiro slams home from close range to save Madrid

Casemiro!! 2-2

Gladbach clear yet another Madrid free-kick.

Four minutes for Madrid to get the equaliser!

Bensebaini sends it well over. Madrid regroup.

Gladbach free-kick. Taking their time now and Madrid players aren't happy.

Benzema volleys home from close range to hand Madrid a lifeline. 2-1 down with less than 5 to go.

It's all Madrid, subs Rodrygo and Hazard looking to make something from nothing in the final stages.

Madrid sub:

OFF Asensio

ON Rodrygo

Asensio standing still ready to be taken off. Could be injured.

Neuhaus from distance! Straight at Courtois. Just over 10 minutes remaining and Real Madrid are heading for a second Champions League defeat in a week.

Double sub for the home side:

OFF Stindl & Plea

ON Wolf & Embolo

Bensebaini booked for a late tackle on Casemiro.

Gladbach block another Madrid shot and burst forward. Memories of Shakhtar last week come to mind.

Elvedi heads it clear. Cross after cross coming into the German's box. They continue to clean up. Madrid go again in search of a goal. Hazard makes a darting run to the near post and puts it wide from 6 yards. Great chance!

Rodrygo looks like he'll come on in the next few minutes. Still 2-0. Gladbach defending really well.

Substitution for Gladbach:

OFF Thuram

ON Herrmann

Double sub for Madrid:

OFF Vinicius & Kroos

ON Hazard & Modric

Kroos free drops to Asensio, who strikes straight at Sommer from 30 yards out.

Borussia now have two banks of four and are dropping deeper. Kramer goes high on Valverde. Madrid free-kick. Kroos standing over it.

Stindl strikes just wide of Courtois' far post. So, so close. Fine effort as Gladbach look to get a third and wrap this up.

Vinicius beats his man and whips it to the far post, Sommer comes out to collect. Hazard and Modric currently warming up for Madrid..

Valverde fouls Thuram. Gladbach free-kick. Zidane needs to make a couple of changes.

This says it all!

Madrid with 61% possession and 15 attempts on goal but nothing to show for it. Gladbach 2-0 Madrid.

Zidane touchline

What must he be thinking?

Madrid have just over a half an hour to turn this around.

Madrid players appeal for offside but Thuram is played on and extends the German side's lead.

Thuram again! Gladbach go 2-0 up

It could have been two! Casemiro makes a vital interception to prevent Gladbach from doubling their lead. Kramer did brilliantly to beat three men, but Casemiro got back just in time.

Madrid are unbeaten in their last nine matches against German teams (W6 D3), a run that started after a 2-0 defeat to Wolfsburg in April 2016. They have won four of their last five away fixtures in the group stages, too.

A Clásico triumph over rivals Barcelona has helped silence the recent critics - for now at least, but another defeat tonight will relight the fire.

Los Blancos have created the chances but just lacking that precision in the final third.

Another Madrid corner! Mendy and Asensio involved again. Madrid continue to try to break through. Still plenty of time for Zidane's team. You can see them getting one.

Gladbach currently sit 6th in the Bundesliga. Madrid are second in LaLiga.

Asensio hits the bar! his left-footed volley bounces up and off the bar. What a start to the second half!

Gladbach have us underway!

No half-time changes for either side.

The teams are on their way out for the second half. Madrid have lost their last three Champions League matches. Twice to Manchester City and last week's defeat to Shakhtar. They've never lost four in a row. Will Borussia be the team that makes it four? We're just about to kick-off for the second 45.

Zidane made four half-time changes recently against Cádiz. He and his team are losing again, will he opt to change things up for the second half?

The ref blows for half-time. Gladbach lead 1-0. Madrid have been quite good but find themselves behind in Germany. Big second half ahead!

Ramos battles

Alassane Plea of Borussia battles for possession with Sergio Ramos.

Good build-up play from Madrid, the ball falls to Lucas Vazquez on the right but he sends his cross too long. The Galician is Zidane's fourth choice right-back. Injuries to Carvajal, Nacho and Odriozola means Vazquez gets a rare start tonight.

Gladbach having their spell now. Plea and Thuram the threats going forward. The Bundesliga outfit just happy to slow it back down before the break. Their first real period of possession in this first half.

Gladbach 1-0 Real Madrid

Attempts on goal:

Gladbach - 2

Madrid - 10

It's been all Madrid at Borussia Park, but it's the home side who lead! Madrid continue to attack, they have been very attacking tonight. Zidane won't have too much to complain about at half-time.

The goal stands. Gladbach 1-0 Madrid

Thuram buries it past Courtois,'s going to VAR

Marcus Thuram puts the home side 1-0 up against the run of play! Brilliant pass, brilliant finish.

Kroos strikes! excellent effort from distance that is well saved by Swiss keeper Sommer. Madrid having arguably their best game of the season so far!

Neuhaus fouls. Madrid free. Kroos plays it short. Out to Mendy and it's another Madrid corner. Mendy offering plenty down the left wing.

Madrid face the possibility of losing four consecutive games across all European competitions for the first time in their history.

Gladbach are looking for their breather now, slowing the play down.

Madrid go again! this tiime it's broken down by Lainer - who blocks Vinicius and it's out for another corner.

Ramos rises highest and heads wide. More good work down the right from Vazquez.

Plenty happening tonight!

Madrid already looking more balanced with Ferland Mendy on his natural side.

Benzema chest it down, spins and smacks his half-volley high and wide.

Both sides looking to break quickly. Madrid defend Gladbach's quick counter and the German side prevent Vinicius' cross down the other end. Lively now!

Courtois jumps out and catches from a wide cross. The Belgian has been one of Los Blancos' better performers this season.

Marcus Thuram starts for the Germans tonight - son of World Cup winner Lilian. If he's anything like his father, he'll have a fine career.

Casemiro shoots from distance and it flies wide!

Most of the ball in Gladbach's half in the opening five minutes as both teams look to set out their stall.

Mönchengladbach have set-up in a 4-2-3-1 with Christoph Kramer & Florian Neuhaus in a double-pivot.

Sergio Ramos returns to Champions League action tonight after missing the 3-2 defeat to Shakhtar last week.

Lucas Vazquez starts at right-back for Madrid tonight.

Real Madrid kick us off and play in all white from right to left as we watch it.

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid: what the managers said

Zinedine Zidane:  "The performance we delivered in El Clásico is exactly the kind of display we need to produce tomorrow. We played well, fought as a team and the most important thing is that we try and do that tomorrow. We've got to reproduce what we did at the weekend. We've got to put in a good performance and we know the situation we're in this, our second Champions League game. We'll have to stay focused for the 90 minutes, fight and battle. It'll be tough and we'll have to be focused on what we do out on the pitch."

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid: what the managers said

Marco Rose: "It’s obviously very special to be playing against Real Madrid and we’re really looking forward to going up against a world-class opponent like them. Madrid have got some incredible footballers in their ranks and they play at an unbelievably high standard, but even a team like them can have an off day. We have to take advantage of any of the mistakes that they make and take the game to them. If we go out and fight, I think we can surprise them."

Gladbach set to start in a 4-2-3-1

According to German outlet Kicker, Borussia Mönchengladbach will set-up in a 4-2-3-1 tonight vs Real Madrid.

Christoph Kramer & Florian Neuhaus in a double-pivot, Jonas Hofmann & Marcus Thuram on the flanks, Breel Embolo behind Alassane Pléa.

Borussia Park is looking beautiful tonight!

Real Madrid's 21-man matchday squad

Borussia Park is the venue for tonight's Group B clash

The stage is set for Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Real Madrid!

Eden Hazard back in the fold

Zidane welcomes Eden Hazard back to the squad for the first time this season but the Belgian is likely to start on the bench, unless anything happens to Lucas Vázquez before the game: the Spain winger will be forced to fill in at right-back with Dani Carvajal, Álvaro Odriozola and Nacho all out injured. Odegaard remains on the sideline with Mariano.

Clásico victory over Barcelona

Zidane’s side steadied themselves ahead of the trip to Germany, where they do not traditionally fare well, with a 3-1 Clásico victory over Barcelona at the weekend but Gladbach will fancy their chances of causing an upset after being seconds and Romelu Lukaku’s knee away from beating Inter in the San Siro.

Champions League Group B

Borussia Mönchegladbach host Real Madrid at the Borussia Park tonight in the second round of Champions League group stage matches in an unexpected position: Marco Rose’s side sit ahead of Zinedine Zidane’s Madrid after a draw against the Inter on the opening night. Shakhtar currently occupy top spot in Group B after beating the 13-times title winners in the Spanish capital.
