Atalanta vs Liverpool: Champions League preview

The teams occupying the top two places in Group D go into Wednesday’s game unbeaten so far in this year’s competition. This will be the first time these two clubs have crossed paths in Europe although hosts Atalanta have met Merseyside opponents before, they faced Everton in the Europa League three years ago, and served the Blues an 8-1 walloping on aggregate. Liverpool have ample experience of playing Italian teams and Atalanta will be the ninth in a long list of Italian clubs that they have met in Europe in previous years.

Both teams made it through the group stage in last year’s tournament – Liverpool bowed out at the Last 16 stage, losing home and away to Atlético Madrid while the Italians made it to the next stage only to be denied a place in the semis by PSG.

As for this season, Atalanta sit fourth in Serie A having lost just two of their six league games so far this season – to Sampdoria and Napoli. They kickstarted their Champions League campaign with a comprehensive 0-4 win away at Midtjylland but were then had to come from behind to scrape a 2-2 draw at home to Ajax.

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has named a 22-man squad for the match. He is without centre-back Mattia Caldara, who underwent surgery to repair a knee ligament last month. Also excluded are midfielder Marten de Roon and left-back Robin Gosens - who has yet to recover from a calf muscle injury and his place in the side will go to Johan Mojica. Hans Hateboer and Cristian Romero went off with muscular injuries in the weekend trip to Crotone and  Rafael Tolói took a knock but all three have recovered in time to make the list.

Colombia centre-forward Luis Muriel is the only member of the Atalanta side with experience of Klopp’s Liverpool – he starred up front for Sevilla in both of their group games with the 2017/18 edition. It is expected that Papu Gomez and Duvan Zapata will lead the attack for the home team.

Liverpool meanwhile, appear to have put last month’s nightmare at Aston Villa behind them and have won their last four games in all competitions, only dropping points in the Merseyside derby. Alisson has returned to relieve Adrián of goalkeeping duties. Naby Keita and Joel Matip were back to full training on Monday but Thiago Alcantara remains a doubt. Central defence remains an issue for Klopp after losing Virgil van Dijk and his emergency replacement Fabinho. Recent arrival Kostas Tsimikas is also included in the Reds' travelling party.
