Salzburg vs Bayern Munich: Champions League preview

A fascinating clash between two teams who top their respective leagues is in store. Defending champions Bayern go into Wednesday’s game in the same irrepressible form with which they ended last season. They are unbeaten in 13 straight Champions League matches, after winning both of their first two group game of the current tournament - thrashing Atlético Madrid 4-0 then Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1. Salzburg meanwhile, were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Lokomotiv before narrowly losing to Atlético on Matchday 2.

This is one of several Matchday 3 meetings between clubs who have never met before in European competition. Bayern top Group A on six points and Salzburg are languishing in last place although the group remains very much open – they and Lokomotiv are only two points behind second-placed Atlético.

As for recent domestic form, Jesse Marsch's Salzburg have enjoyed an flawless start to the campaign, they are riding high at the top of the Tipico Bundesliga with 18 points after the first six fixtures and are averaging four goals per game – Zambian centre-forward Patson Daka has netted half of the team’s 24 league goals to date. However he picked up a muscular injury and will not be involved against Bayern - he was taken off halfway through the Atleti game after suffering a torn hamstring which will keep him out for several weeks. Midfielder Antoine Bernede, who suffered a fractured tibia in training last month, is not expected back until the New Year.

Bayern have suffered just one blip since the Bundesliga started, losing their Week 2 meeting to Hoffenheim 4-1. That aside, it’s been victories all the way for Hansi Flick’s men who top the table on 15 points and curiously, the same goal average as Salzburg. Left-back sensation Alphonso Davies will be out for a while after suffering an ankle injury in the recent league meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt. A calf muscle problem has kept Leon Goretzka sidelined while Malik Tillman has been struggling to overcome a knee injury.
