Four key matchups to be aware for the quarter-finals in the Liga MX
The round of wildcards is over with eight teams left for the first round of the 2020 Guardianes tournament that will have a two leg series this week.
In a surprising result on Sunday night Puebla defeated Monterrey in penalty kicks (4-2) to clinch the last spot to the playoffs in the 2020 Guardianes tournament. Now the quarter-finals are set and the first legs will start on Wednesday 25 November and continue on Thursday. The second legs will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
León FC - Puebla
Puebla returns to the playoffs after five years and they will face the best team of the tournament, León FC. The last time they faced each other was in a final match in the 90’s and León took the victory to lift the trophy on that occasion. The No 1 seed shouldn’t have any trouble advancing to the semifinals having only lost one game during the regular season.
Pumas - Pachuca
Historically, Pumas always have a tough time against Pachuca in the playoffs. Under the new format of the Liga MX playoffs, both teams have faced each other on three occasions and twice Pumas got eliminated by Pachuca.
Chivas - América
Chivas had three years without making it to the playoffs and in this tournament they had to play a wildcard game to clinch a spot in the 2020 Guardianes tournament. The team from Guadalajara will have a tough time advancing to the next round, because the last time they defeated Club América was on 18 February, 2017.
Cruz Azul - Tigres UANL
Cruz Azul had a very good tournament and finished as the second seed for the 2020 Guardianes playoffs. In the last 11 games that both teams have faced each other they have equalized five times, Cruz Azul has won 4 and Tigres only twice. Last time they played each other in the playoffs was in the Apertura 2003 when Tigres eliminated Cruz Azul.
