Leo Messi scores stunning hat-trick to equal Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record
The Argentina captain wasted no time at the 2026 World Cup, scoring three goals to move level with the tournament record.

Lionel Messi swept to the top of the World Cup scoring charts with a stunning hat-trick against Algeria. He still needs one more to move clear of Germany legend Miroslav Klose on 16, but Tuesday’s showing served as a real statement of intent from Messi and Argentina.
Incredibly, in the build-up to this summer’s tournament there had been some question marks over Messi’s ability to lead Argentina again. On Tuesday Messi proved that he is still capable of operating at the highest level and a ruthless hat-trick puts Argentina firmly in contention for the biggest prize once again.
Messi scored a first-half screamer to put Argentina ahead, then added a poacher’s finish and a curling strike in the second half to complete his hat-trick, his first at the World Cup. Argentina won 3-0, Messi was the undisputed star.
What is the World Cup scoring record?
Messi entered the 2026 tournament with 13 goals. By the end of his first appearance, he had soared to joint-top of the all-time standings.
Only Miroslav Klose is level with Messi’s 16 World Cup goals. Messi will surely move past the German striker this summer, but he might face competition for top spot.
Former teammate Kylian Mbappé scored twice in France’s win over Senegal earlier on Tuesday, taking his tally to 14 World Cup goals. Both Mbappe and Messi will likely move past Klose this summer; either coould claim top spot by the end of the tournament.
