Maradona, alongside Gardel
We're left with his videos, his genius. The first report about Diego Maradona that was seen in Spain showed him at Argentinos Juniors, beating the great Gatti four times, who had dared to call him chubby. Next came his moves in a Boca - River match, played in the mud, in which he left another great, Fillol, the goalkeeper, destroyed. And there were rabonas, some never seen here, and other stunning goals with the team that won the 1979 World Youth Championship. Maradona moved to Barça and the video of the time captures how he was, a lad, touched by the hand of God, who sculpted in the air with his left foot.
Maradona: World Cup '86 and Napoli
Look out the videos of Diego Maradona. Those ones, and the ones of the World Cup in Mexico, where he played so well his teammates had to defend him. Valdano said: "We're not going to say sorry because Maradona was born in Argentina." At Barça, hepatitis and a brutal injury stopped us being able to enjoy him, but he still left magnificent moments, one of which was suffered by Real Madrid defender Juan José. At Napoli though he was able to open his box of magnificent tricks to the whole world. It was there though that things started to go wrong, for reasons that are set out with harsh precision in the documentary by Asif Kapadia, also responsible for the films about Ayrton Senna and Amy Winehouse.
Memories of Maradona
Without the ball, everything in his life was a struggle. His keen artistic temperament meant the impossibility of expressing his soul with the ball led to him falling into a self-destructive process the world witnessed with sadness. Even so, alongside so much disaster, he left us signs of his nobility. He battled giants and windmills, he sought good causes, he fought for his truths, he battled his addiction, and he suffered more on behalf of his loved ones than for himself. And now, as of today, his bad days are lie far away. There will be no more bad news. Now that he's sitting alongside tango legend Carlos Gardel, we can feel like children once again, simply closing our eyes and evoking his genius.
