Real Madrid vs Atlético: LaLiga preview

Tonight's clash will be the 277th installment of the Madrid derby, and out of those official meetings, Real Madrid have come away victorious 141 times, Atleti have won 68 while 67 of them have ended level. While form counts for little in the derby, Simeone's side have been faring better in domestic competition so far and with good reason, occupy top spot in the table where they are unbeaten on 26 points. Zidane's Madrid lie three places below them in fourth on 20 points so a home win could enable them to close the gap to just three points but defeat in Valdebebebas this evening would give their city rivals a nine-point lead with a game in hand - a sizable advantage at this stage of the campaign. Zidane is expected to field a similar side to the one which beat Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Champions League on Wednesday. Dani Carvajal is available again after overcoming a hamstring injury and could return to the starting XI. Lucas Vázquez, who has deputised for Carvajal in his absence, may well move back into his regular role further up the right wing with Rodrygo in reserve on the bench. Martin Ødegaard, Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Mariano Díaz remain out but Álvaro Odriozola and Militão make Zidane's 21-man squad list.

Visitors Atlético will go into the game with four of Simeone's key players fresh after being rested last weekend. Koke, Marcos Llorente and João Félix were subs in the 2-0 LaLiga win over Real Valladolid while Yannick Carrasco sat that game out although all four took part in Wednesday’s Champions League win at RB Salzburg. Simeone may decide to make changes in midfield by bringing in Thomas Lemar. Recent arrival Geoffrey Kondogbia has come on as a late sub in Atleti's last four league games but has yet to start with his new club.
