Columbus Crew vs Seattle Sounders: MLS Cup preview

Major League Soccer brings the season to close later this evening as Eastern Conference champions Columbus Crew take on the Western Conference champions, and title holders Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final. For Caleb Porter’s Columbus Crew, this will be an unique chance to lift the trophy for the first time on home turf – they were crowned champions at the Home Depot Center in California in 2008 but missed out on what would have been their second title after losing to Portland Timbers at Mapfre Stadium in 2015. The Crew will be moving to their new stadium in the Confluence Village development in the New Year. Brian Schmetzer’s Seattle Sounders are hoping to successfully defend their crown and be proclaimed champions for the third time following on from their triumphs in 2016 and last year. This will be their fourth final in five years.

The Crew will be without midfield pair Darlington Nagbe and Pedro Santos, both recently tested positive for Covid-19 and have not been medically fit to play. Porter could bring in Fatai Alashe and Derrick Etienne Jr as replacements. As for the Sounders, Ecuadorian central defender Xavier Arreaga remained at home where he is waiting for his wife to give birth and he did not travel with the squad. Schmetzer has Yeimar and Shane O’Neill available to fill in at the back.
