Mourinho left "disappointed" by Spurs trio's covid-19 rules breach

Tottenham head coach José Mourinho said on Saturday that he was "disappointed" with Spurs players Giovani lo Celso, Sergio Reguilón and Erik Lamela after they were photographed at a Christmas party that breached coronavirus regulations in England.

Images posted on social media showed Lo Celso, Reguilón and Lamela at a gathering with numerous attendees, despite London currently being under tier-4 covid-19 restrictions.

According to the UK government website, if you are in a tier-4 area you "cannot meet other people indoors, including over the Christmas and New Year period, unless you live with them, or they are part of your support bubble".

Mourinho: "I feel disappointed, just that"

"We don’t need to open the door to you and let you know what is going on internally, what are going to be the consequences, how did we approach that negative surprise. I feel disappointed, just that," Mourinho said.

"And we [as a] club feel disappointed, because we give the players all the education, we give the players all the conditions, and of course we are not happy. It was a negative surprise for us."

Spurs "strongly condemn" players' actions

In a statement, Tottenham said: "We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image showing some of our players with family and friends together at Christmas, particularly as we know the sacrifices everybody around the country made to stay safe over the festive period.

"The rules are clear, there are no exceptions, and we regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example. The matter will be dealt with internally."

Lamela was left out of the squad for Tottenham's 3-0 Premier League win over Leeds United on Saturday, while Reguilón was an unused substitute. Lo Celso is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.
