LA Galaxy appoint Greg Vanney as new head coach
The five-times MLS Cup champions have reached an agreement with Greg Vanney after his six seasons at Toronto FC, where he won an MLS Treble.
After weeks of negotiations, Los Angeles Galaxy and Greg Vanney have reached an agreement for the 46-year-old to manage the club for the upcoming 2021 MLS season. Vanney started his professional career as a player with the five-times MLS Cup champions and after spending six years at Toronto FC returns as manager.
MLS Treble
During his spell with the Canada-based club, Vanney became the only coach in the history of the league to win the MLS Treble by lifting the MLS Cup, MLS Supporters’ Shield and the Canadian Championship during the 2017 campaign.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to coach the LA Galaxy,” said Vanney. “The LA Galaxy are an iconic club with a rich history in Los Angeles, MLS and North American soccer over the last 25 years. I am committed to working tirelessly for this club, our fans and Los Angeles to win a championship. I look forward to this new challenge in my career and am eager to get started.”
The 46-year-old resigned from his job at Toronto FC after the 2020 MLS Cup last season, leaving as the most successful head coach and longest-serving manager in the team's history. Vanney left Toronto with 112 wins and coached a total of 250 matches. His all time coaching record is 87-66-48 in MLS regular season and 10-5-2 in playoffs.
“Greg is a part of the history of the LA Galaxy and we are confident that he is the right person to lead our team moving forward,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese. “He has deep knowledge of this club and Major League Soccer as a player and a coach and has proven to be a consistent winner with a championship pedigree. His accolades as Toronto FC’s manager are evidence of his ability to create and sustain success in our league. Other accomplishments
Vanney was also named MLS coach of the year and CONCACAF coach of the year in 2017. He led Toronto FC to the playoffs five times (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020) and made it to the MLS Cup finals on three occasions (2016, 2017, 2019). Internationally, he led Toronto to the CONCACAF Champions League Final once in 2018, losing to Chivas, and won three straight Canadian Championships between 2016 and 2018.
