Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has defended the club following the latest revelations about Lionel Messi’s contract, saying the player deserved “every euro”.

Spanish paper El Mundo has revealed details about Messi’s most recent contract signed in 2017, which it claims was worth a staggering €555,237,619. Including bonuses Messi was set to earn up to €138 million per season under the contract, according to the paper.

The story, which broke just after midnight on Saturday, drew immediate reaction from Font, who took to social media to defend the club and the player.

Font: We want Messi to stay forever

"Messi has earned every euro that Barça has paid him. He hasn’t ruined us. On the contrary, he is the best player in history and we want him to stay with us forever,” tweeted Font.

Font is one of the three candidates for the Barcelona presidency, all of whom will, if elected, hope to convince Messi to stay after his current deals expires in June.

Messi tried to engineer his exit last summer but the club was unwilling to waiver his €700 million buyout clause. But this summer, indications are that the Argentine great will leave on a free transfer, with PSG and Manchester City identified as the favourites to sign him.
