Tigres vs Ulsan Hyundai: Club World Cup preview
CONCACAF representatives Tigres UNAL will face Asian champions Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea on Thursday, February 4, 2021.
The winner of Thursday's Club World Cup quarter-final will play Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras on February 7.
Due to Auckland City's withdrawal from the competition because of New Zealand's covid-19 restrictions, the competition will begin in the quarter-finals. Tigres take on Ulsan Hyundai, while Qatari side Al-Duhail SC will take on Al Ahly of Egypt on the same day.
Separated by almost 11,500 kilometres on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean, Ulsan Hyundai Tigers of the K-League and Tigres UANL of Liga MX will get the rare opportunity to face one another when the sides face off in the second round of the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020.
AFC champions
Ulsan's players are relishing the opportunity fresh from winning the AFC Champions League at the end of 2020. The Korean side will be in familiar surroundings as the Asian club championship was postponed due to covid-19 and restarted with a centralised tournament held in Qatar.
The Tigers' successful run culminated with a 2-1 victory over Persepolis in the final with Yoon Bitgaram named the tournament's most valuable player. If Tigres get past Ulsan, Palmeiras will have deal with one of the most prolific strikers in the Americas: André-Pierre Gignac.
"I just tried to enjoy the games rather than feeling burdened with pressure to perform," Yoon said to FIFA.com. "It wasn’t just me – the rest of the squad also enjoyed playing together, which I think gave us positive energy and enabled us to perform as well as we did."
Unfortunately, the tournament will not be the same as in years past as Auckland City (OFC) withdrew from the tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic and New Zealand’s quarantine restrictions.
A limited number of fans will be able to attend the matches in line with Qatar’s covid-19 protocols
