Explosive plays potentially decisive in Super Bowl

The Chiefs have established themselves as the most devastating offensive team in the NFL. Drawing comparisons to the NBA's Golden State Warriors at the peak of their powers, the Chiefs' ability to score deluges of points helps them put games to bed in a hurry.

Tampa Bay learned that the hard way in the regular-season meeting between these two teams back in Week 12 when the Chiefs surged into a 17-0 lead en route to a 27-24 win.

Mahomes had 229 passing yards in the first quarter while Tyreek Hill had 203 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the same period.

The Buccaneers simply cannot afford to have the Chiefs get such a jump on them this time around and, if they are to successfully go toe to toe with the champions, they will need to maintain their tendency for quick strikes.

Brady on verge of turning lowly Bucs into Super Bowl champs

(Reuters) - When Tom Brady left the Patriots after two decades for the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason, he said he was doing so to see "how great I can be".

Before the season even started, Brady, who signed a two-year, $50 million deal with the Bucs, took matters into his own hands by bringing longtime Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski out of retirement to join him in Tampa.

The team played its best football in the final month of the season including upset wins over the Saints and Green Bay Packers in the playoffs to set up a meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday with the Lombardi Trophy on the line.

"Part of the reason why I came here is because there were a lot of great things here - a great coaching staff, great players. I felt like I could come in and really help the team win," Brady told reporters.

Brady: "I love playing with Rob Gronkowski"

Tom Brady believes "everybody in their next life wishes they can come back as Rob Gronkowski" as the superstar duo aim to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to glory at Super Bowl LV.

"He's one of the most unique people, as you know, just being around him. He's so positive I think everybody wishes in their next life they can come back as Rob just because he's got such a great personality about him, just his way of being positive and he's a real high achiever.

"He's very competitive, and I see the competitive nature, the determination like, when you're down and out, you want him with you. And I think that speaks to him as a team-mate and as a person. And I love playing with him.

"You know I've known him for a long time, and I'm just so proud of all his accomplishments. He's an amazing guy. And I know, for both of us, we rely on each other a lot for different things. And I'll be looking for him this Sunday so that's the most important thing."

Abdul-Jabbar on an aging Tom Brady

'The aging athlete hears a nagging thrum on continuous loop inside the brain: “Do I still have it? Do I even belong in this game? Don’t embarrass yourself.”

In a very visceral way, it is like facing death. Not the cessation of bodily functions, but rather the cessation of one’s identity. How you see yourself. How others see you. Your value as a human being. There is a vast difference between being an active player earning fresh accolades and being a retired player resting on past accomplishments.

As those accomplishments grow smaller in the rearview mirror, you feel more like a fraud still milking them so many years later.'

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gives his view on the Bucs quarterback.

Buccaneers of history

The Bucs were formed in 1976 and took a while to really get going, although did manage to make it for some play-off action around the turn of the 1980s.

Quarterback Doug Williams along with defensive end Lee Roy Selmon were both highly regarded across the league.

Come rain or shine, we will play ball

“In lieu of a storm forming on an advancing cold front, dry air would likely sweep in during the afternoon hours in Tampa on Sunday.

However, there is likely to be a storm that forms along the front, which will not only slow its forward progress, but could keep rain in the Tampa area well into the evening hours," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

"Hometown routine critical in Bucs' Super Bowl bid" says boss Arians

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making the most of their hometown advantage in the run-up to Sunday's Super Bowl, settling into a routine after a chaotic National Football League (NFL) season where virtually nothing felt like business as usual.

After numerous delays related to the covid-19 pandemic, but no outright cancellations, the NFL is barreling toward its season finale with the Bucs taking on the Kansas City Chiefs at home - the first time in the Super Bowl's 55-year history that a team has competed in the championship in their own stadium.

Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians said there were ample benefits for the team to enjoy, beyond what could certainly be a Bucs-friendly crowd inside Raymond James Stadium on Sunday.

"It's really, really amazing to just be in our facility in our locker room on the practice field, same drive to work every single day, and being able to stay in that routine has been critical," said Arians, who signed six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady in the off-season before leading the team to an 11-5 record.

The team triumphed in three straight road games in the post-season before settling in for Super Bowl preparations at home, where a reduced-capacity of 22,000 fans will be allowed in on gameday due to health and safety restrictions.

The Weeknd promise to tone it down

The Weeknd, nown for pushing the limits of creativity in his performances, said on Thursday his Super Bowl halftime gig will continue to follow a story he's been telling but in a more family-friendly way.

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has performed recently with his face covered in bandages and released gory videos, including one in which two women come across his disembodied head as part of his performance art storyline.

While being mostly tight-lipped about the details for his show during Sunday's NFL championship game in Tampa, Florida, The Weeknd did say it will be toned down significantly from a graphic standpoint.

"I definitely want to be respectful to the viewer at home," The Weeknd told a news conference. "I will still incorporate some of the storyline. It's a very cohesive story I am telling throughout this era and throughout this year so the story will continue but definitely will keep it PG for the families."

Appearing at the Super Bowl is considered the music industry's top promotional platform with Lady Gaga, Prince, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and the Rolling Stones among previous performers.

While most performers during the Super Bowl, which is the most watched television event of the year in the United States, spend their entire 12-minute set confined to an on-field stage, The Weeknd will also use the surrounding area.

"Due to the covid and for the safety of the players and the workers we kind of built a stage within the stadium," he said. "We're also using the field as well but we wanted to kind of do something that we've never done before. I'm not going to tell you anything 'cuz you have to watch on Sunday."
