Real Madrid cleared to play Liverpool game at home

It has been confirmed that Liverpool will be cleared to fly to Spain on 6 April, meaning Real Madrid will be able to host the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at home at the Estadio Alfredo del Stefano.

There had been uncertainty about whether Madrid would be able to play at home due to the restrictions in place on flights entering Spain from the United Kingdom.

However, a Spanish government spokesperson has confirmed that these restrictions will end on 30 March, after it was made known that these restrictions would not be prolonged, at least on the territory of the United Kingdom. Restrictions, however, will remain with Brazil and South Africa beyond 30 March.

The Spanish government placed restrictions on flights from Brazil, South Africa and the UK due to the new variants of the coronavirus that have originated from those countries. And this is why Atlético de Madrid were unable to play the home leg of their last-16 Champions League tie against Chelsea at the Wanda Metropolitano, which was instead played in Bucharest.

The restrictions on flights to Spain from the United Kingdom came into force on 22 December and were later extended until 6pm (CET) on 30 March. But on account of the data available, the government has decided not to prolong them beyond that date, ensuring Madrid’s home tie against Liverpool will not be affected.

That will come as a huge relief for Los Blancos, who will not have to worry about organising an alternative venue for the game outside Spain, which would have put the team at a major disadvantage.

Following the first leg at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano on 6 April, the second leg of the Champions League quarter final tie against Liverpool will be played at Anfield on 14 April.
