Mexico confirm friendly against Iceland

The Mexico national soccer team is set to return to the United States to play exhibition matches for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic hit the country last year. ‘El Tri’ is scheduled to play against the Iceland national football team in Arlington, Texas on 30 May and fans will be allowed inside the stadium. Texas is one of the states in the U.S. that have eased the coronavirus restrictions and they are fully open.

The friendly against Iceland will take place at the AT&T stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and it will help as preparation for the semifinal game against Costa Rica for the CONCACAF Nations League in June. Also since this is not part of any FIFA international break the coach from Mexico, Gerardo Martino, will only call players from the Liga MX.

‘El Tri returns to the U.S.

The last time the Mexican national team played in the United States was back in September of 2019 and Martino suffered his first defeat since taking the job. In that friendly ‘El Tri’ was defeated 4-0 by Argentina with Lautaro Martínez being the man of the match for the South America side.

Mexico already played a set of friendlies during the March FIFA international break. ‘El Tri’ lost in their first exhibition match of the year against Wales 1-0 at the Cardiff City stadium. Then a few days later they traveled to Austria and bounced back to defeat Costa Rica 1-0 with a late goal from Hirving Lozano.
