Liverpool beat Chelsea to go joint-third on the list of the FA Cup’s most successful clubs last year, as Kostas Tsimikas’ decisive penalty saw the Reds win the tournament for the eighth time in their history.

After a goalless Wembley final went to penalties, Mason Mount’s spot-kick miss for Chelsea proved crucial, allowing Tsimikas to secure a 6-5 shootout win for Jürgen Klopp’s men.

Klopp is the first ever German coach to win the FA Cup.

Liverpool equal Chelsea, Tottenham FA Cup hauls

Liverpool have now drawn level with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the all-time FA Cup standings, with only Arsenal and Manchester United ahead of the trio. The Gunners are the English domestic cup’s most decorated club, having lifted the trophy 14 times.

Their domination of the competition has been particularly pronounced since the turn of the millennium: half of their FA Cup wins have come since then. Indeed, their most recent triumph, in 2020, was their fourth in seven years.

United are two behind Arsenal, their last FA Cup success coming in 2016.

Some of FA Cup’s most successful clubs haven’t won it in a while...

Below the FA Cup’s top five, the next-most frequent winners are Aston Villa, who have gone all the way in the tournament seven times, but not since 1957. In the 65 years that have followed, Villa have only been back to the final twice, most recently in 2015 - when they were thumped 4-0 by Arsenal.

Current Premier League champions Manchester City have seven FA Cups, while Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers have six, but they are, like Villa, on long barren runs in the competition.

Newcastle haven’t won the FA Cup since 1955; Blackburn, since way back in 1928.

Chelsea make unwanted FA Cup final history

Chelsea may already be among the competition’s kings, but their haul of FA Cups would be even greater were it not for a terrible recent run of results in the final.

The Blues’ defeat to Liverpool was their fourth loss in five FA Cup final appearances since 2017, and their third in a row. The West Londoners are the first club since Newcastle to lose three consecutive appearances in the showpiece game - and are the first ever to do so in successive years.
