Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid live online: LaLiga 2020-21

Real Madrid travel to Athletic’s Cathedral on Sunday in search of the victory that will keep their title hopes alive going into the final round of matches next weekend, all of which subscribers in the US can enjoy on Fanatiz. Athletic, naturally, would like nothing more than to make sure that the title doesn’t go to the Bernabéu - the Basque outfit sharing a historical affinity with Atlético - and Marcelino’s side have the weapons to torpedo Madrid’s late run towards the Liga summit.

Madrid will have fond memories of travelling to San Mamés in the 2011-12 season, when victory would see the title head back to the capital from the Camp Nou trophy cabinet. Goals from Gonzalo Higuaín, Mesut Özil and Cristiano Ronaldo secured the league for José Mourinho’s side, the Portuguese delivering the domestic title for the first time since 2008 in his second season in charge.

Madrid, Atlético and Barcelona still in Liga chase

Zinedine Zidane’s side have been up and down this season but then Atlético and Barcelona have hardly been dead-eyed assassins either – any one of the three remaining contenders could have wrapped up the 2020-21 title weeks ago with a little more consistency. Madrid’s last six games read DWDWDW for example, while Barça chucked a two-goal lead away against Levante to draw 3-3 in what has in recent seasons become more of a classic encounter than the more hyped Clásico itself. Atlético were 10 points clear a couple of months ago but at least Diego Simeone knows his side are reliant on themselves: beat Osasuna and Valladolid and the title is theirs.

Athletic will do their best to hasten that outcome on Sunday and after reaching the last two Copa del Rey finals and having beaten Atlético and Sevilla in recent weeks the Lions have shown they still have plenty to say about the destination of the trophy themselves.
