Belgium, the world’s top-ranked national side, will be missing some key men when they take on co-hosts Russia in St Petersburg in the teams’ Euro 2020 Group B opener today.
The Red Devils will be without injured midfielders Kevin de Bruyne and Axel Witsel, while captain Eden Hazard seems unlikely to start as he struggles for fitness.
Roberto Martínez’s men face a side they beat twice in qualifying for Euro 2020, winning 3-1 in Brussels in March 2019, before claiming a thumping 4-1 victory at tonight’s venue eight months later.
While Belgium are out to bounce back from the disappointment of their quarter-final exit to Wales five years ago, Russia are aiming to get out of the group stage in a European Championship for only the second time since the break-up of the Soviet Union.
Stanislav Cherchesov’s side will be spearheaded by a striker, Artem Dzyuba, who this season top scored in the Russian Premier League to fire Zenit to the title, and who is on the cusp of becoming his country’s all-time leading marksman.
Dzuyba has 29 goals for Russia, just one short of Aleksandr Kherzakhov’s record tally of 30.
