Spain vs Sweden: Euro 2020 Group E preview

Spain, who dominated this tournament with back-to-back triumphs in 2008 and 2012, have had their fair share of problems in the run-up to tonight’s opening game against Sweden. Pedro Busquets and Diego Llorente tested positive for coronavirus which forced the rest of the squad into isolation little over a week before the competition was due to start. For the warm-up friendly against Lithuania, Luis Enrique was forced to field a side made up entirely of Under-21 players and hand the reins over to Luis De la Fuente.

Of the side that lifted the trophy in Kiev nine years ago, only two players remain in the Spain squad – Busquets and Jordi Alba. Captain Sergio Ramos was left out of the squad as he has struggled with injury problems since the start of the New Year. Out of the 24 players listed in the Spain squad, nine have fewer than 10 caps at full international level. Luis Enrique has also been deliberating over who should be his first-choice goalkeeper and while David de Gea, who has 45 caps, is by far his most experienced keeper, he will likely field Unai Simon between the sticks this evening. The Athletic Club keeper has made seven appearances for the national side so far. Up front, the coach must decide whether to field Morata or Gerard Moreno, the top scorer in last season’s Europa League, alongside Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres.

If it is any consolation to Luis Erique, Sweden have also been laid low by Covid-19. Winger Dejan Kulusevski tested positive for the virus and will sit out tonight’s game. That forced coach Janne Andersson had to alter his plans in the days running up to the tournament although his team will be full of confidence after winning of their warm-up friendlies against Finland and Armenia.

The two teams are familiar to each other and emerged from the same qualifying group on the road to the finals. Spain topped Group F unbeaten on 26 points with Sweden just behind them on 21 points. Their most recent meeting was in Solna in October 2019 where they played out a 1-1 draw with goals from Marcus Berg and Rodrigo.

In today’s other Group E match, Poland face Slovakia in St Petersburg.
